Grace and Mwansa are two young women from Zambia and Cameroon. Their move to Baden-Württemberg has given them new opportunities and helped them become more resilient and adaptable.
But their story is about more than just moving to a new country. Each place they lived brought unique experiences that shaped their goals and dreams. After facing early challenges, they settled in Oberaichen and Echterdingen, Germany, and reached important milestones.

Let’s start with Grace. She was born in Cameroon and moved to Germany when she was three. She began elementary school here and finished with her A-levels. After high school, she wants to study law in Tübingen. Her journey has not always been easy, and she faced challenges in her early school years.
She remembers being asked, “Why are you black? Does your skin rub off?” Things got better for her in secondary school. Even with these early challenges, Grace always believed in her dreams. Since 2022, she has been part of the youth municipal council in Leinfelden-Echterdingen and wants to get involved in politics and social life.
Mwansa also had to adapt. She moved to Germany when she was ten, learned German, and is now studying business administration and logistics. After finishing school, she completed an internship in air freight at Stuttgart Airport, helping with shipments and speaking with clients. In summer 2024, she began studying business law.
To help pay for her studies, Mwansa uses her entrepreneurial skills. She tutors students with new teaching methods and has started her own cosmetics business, which is a big achievement.
These activities help Mwansa earn money, but they also make her happy and let her see more of Germany. On her short trips, she learns about new places and people, and maybe even makes a small dream come true.
Grace and Mwansa are connected by their ambition and their ties to Germany. Both are looking for a sense of belonging.

Grace and Mwansa became friends by chance in Echterdingen. As they got to know each other, they discussed the cultural differences between Zambia, Cameroon, and Germany, sharing their experiences and deepening their understanding of one another. Even though they sometimes miss home, visiting once a year is enough for them. After many shared experiences and personal growth, Mwansa and Grace feel they have truly found a home in Baden-Württemberg.
